Norway’s Green Hydrogen Ambitions Accelerate with Dual Support at Rjukan

In a significant boost to Europe’s green transition, Norwegian Hydrogen has secured dual funding for its new production facility in Rjukan, Norway. This is one of the few green hydrogen projects to receive support from both the EU Hydrogen Bank and Innovation Norway. This marks a pivotal step in scaling green hydrogen for hard-to-abate sectors like maritime transport, where zero-emission solutions are urgently needed.

Norwegian Hydrogen has achieved a significant milestone for green energy development in Norway with substantial backing from the European Union and national authorities. The company’s green hydrogen project in Rjukan has secured a funding offer of up to EUR 13.2 million through the EU Hydrogen Bank auction—part of the EU Innovation Fund—and an additional NOK 100 million in total support from Innovation Norway, split equally between a grant and a green growth loan.

We are among the few industry players already producing green hydrogen for customers across the Nordic region. We look forward to significantly increasing our capacity through the Rjukan project.

Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen

The project marks a significant step forward in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors, including maritime transport, which is one of the primary targets of both national and EU climate strategies. The Rjukan facility will help meet the growing demand for zero-emission energy, especially in logistics and heavy transport.

The funding from the EU Innovation Fund and Innovation Norway strengthens our commitment to deliver green Hydrogen to our customers,” said Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen.

Statements from the Norwegian Government in response to EU Hydrogen Bank support to Norway:

“This is an important step in the work to cut emissions, build new industry, and create new jobs,” said Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment.

We have ambitions to contribute to developing future hydrogen value chains in cooperation with the EU. The auction scheme provides Norwegian players a valuable opportunity to access a growing European market and strengthen their position in new, green value chains.”

    Minister of Energy Terje Aasland.

Statements from Innovation Norway related to their grant and green growth loan to Norwegian Hydrogen at Rjukan:

Innovation Norway also emphasized the project’s strategic value for the national green transition:
“The market for green hydrogen is still new and in its early stages, but the potential could be huge,” said Håkon Haugli, CEO of Innovation Norway. “By helping to finance this project, we are contributing to positioning the Norwegian industry in a sector that could become crucial.”

It is exciting to see how Norwegian Hydrogen has succeeded in building a position as a key player in developing a green hydrogen value chain with international ambitions from their base in Norway.

Helge Gjerde, Regional Director of Innovation Norway

The grant agreement with the EU is expected to be signed later this year.
